Cold Weather Prompts Salvation Army To Add More Beds

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -With temperatures expected to drop near freezing tonight.
The salvation army is prepping for a big crowd of people who need a warm place to sleep. Temperatures are expected to drop near freezing Thursday night.

The salvation army is located at 1955 Broadway in Macon.

The staff says when the temperature drops below 35 degrees they go into emergency status.
In addition to the Salvation Army’s 40 beds, volunteers made room for more men by putting out 24 additional mats.

In the event they run out of space, volunteers find other locations for people to sleep. They also serve up a free breakfast at 6 a.m., and free dinner at 6 p.m.

According to Asst. CSRC Director, Jeff Mooney, women are housed in a different building.

“The women stay in the administration building,” says Mooney. “Over there, they have a capacity of 40 beds with an overflow capacity of seven, that’s including women and children.”
