Cleanup Crews Respond to Mess Left By Tornadoes in Monroe County

Workers spent the day clearing roads, repairing wires, and rebuilding homes.

“As far as the cleanup process to try and restore things to normal, somewhat normal, it’s going to take weeks,” says Monroe County EMA Director, Matthew Perry.

Nearly 50 houses were damaged after Thursday’s tornadoes ripped through the county. Perry says 19 were destroyed or severely damaged.·The cost of the cleanup is still piling up.

“We’re mindful of cost but, at the same time we got to get the job done. We’re going to go back we’ll figure everything out later, but now we’ve just go to get these utilities restored and roadways open,” says Perry.

There are still three roads closed, but Monroe County Road Superintendent Sid Banks says drivers should be on the lookout for workers who are still out there restoring power to nearly 150 customers.

“We’re really lucky. As I drive around the county, I just can’t wrap my head around the idea that we didn’t have anybody killed,” says Perry.

Only 10 people were injured when the two twisters hit. Both Banks and Perry say complete restoration will take several weeks to months.
