City of Macon Wants To Hear Your Ideas On How To Revitalize Second Street

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The City of Macon wants to hear from you! Plans to revitalize the Second Street corridor are in the works and city officials want you to share your thoughts and ideas.

The city plans to revitalize the entire Second Street corridor from east Macon through downtown and all the way to Mercer University Boulevard. Plans include improving the sidewalks and roadways to make them more pedestrian friendly.

The city also hopes to bring more businesses and residents to the corridor which would boost the local economy. The master plan and initial work will be funded by the SPLOST tax approved by voters last year.

Chris Floore with the City of Macon says residents have been very vocal about what they want to see happen on Second Street.

“They want it to be more walkable, more green space, more trees,” he said. “They want to see more businesses, the want to see more people walking at evening hours between apartments, between condos. They want to see a return of people moving to a vibrant, urban core.”

City officials hope to have a master design by the beginning of next year. Floore says we could start seeing some of the improvements shortly after.

The city is currently in phase two of the project and this is where you come in. Several meetings will be held over the next few days and everyone is invited to share your ideas on revitalizing the Second Street corridor.
