City of Macon Plans on Using Point System to Monitor Discipline

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Macon City Council committee is holding city employees responsible for their actions with a new point system that monitors discipline.

The city council’s employee development and compensation committee agreed Wednesday to create a 12-point system to keep track of employees’ disciplinary issues.

Committee Chairman Charles Jones broke down each point.

He says council realized a need to tighten disciplinary actions so there will be a standard.

If an employee reaches 12 points then there are grounds for termination.

3 points – Written Reprimand

5 points – Suspension for Five Days or Less

7 points – Suspension for Six Days or More

8 points – Demotion or Suspension and Demotion

Jones says this system will create more transparency between city employees and the public.

“Not only do the employees need to know, not only do the department heads need to know, the public, the citizens that we serve now need to know that we’re not going to have anybody on the force and something happen and they have 28 disciplinary reprimands or suspensions,” Jones said. “That’s just not going to happen anymore.”

Jones spoke with city department heads including both Macon Police Chief Mike Carswell and Fire Chief Marvin Riggins, and they approve.

The point system is scheduled to begin on July 11.
