Cirrus Academy Charter School opens its doors
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Qiana Jefferson is feeling some added relaxation on the first day of school at Cirrus Academy Charter School.
“Oh yes,” Jefferson said. “Great relief.”
Jefferson is relieved in more ways than one. She knows her three kids are in good hands at the new charter school.
“I’m excited about the STEAM curriculum and the classroom ratio,” Jefferson said. “There’s more one-on-one time with the students.”
STEAM is an acronym for a teaching curriculum that focuses on five things: science, technology, engineering, art and music.
The CEO of Cirrus Academy, Dr. Ashanti Johnson is a proponent for that system.
“It’s up to us to help them be successful,” she said. “Some learn different ways so we’ll accommodate that. Some people have different strengths so we’ll accommodate that.”
Cirrus Academy takes over the building that was formerly Hamilton Elementary School on Pio Nono Avenue. They are currently teaching kindergarten through eighth grade, with the hopes of adding ninth grade next school year.
“The philosophy for our school is every child walking through that door is a success story waiting to happen,” Johnson said.
