Cinco De Mayo celebrations underway in Middle Georgia

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Cinco de Mayo celebrations are underway in Middle Georgia.

Some people started celebrating Tuesday as soon as the doors opened for business at Margarita’s Bar & Grill on Bass Road.

“It’s a celebration of Mexico and the battle against the French,” the General Manger of Margarita’s on Bass Road Gabrial Gomez said.

Gomez says Cinco De Mayo has turned into an international event, but he hopes people will remember the real reason of this day.

“The purpose of the celebration, it was getting rid of the invaders,” he added.

The Mexican army was victorious over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Although many people may not know Mexican history, they still use this day as a chance to get out and enjoy Mexican food and drinks.

Julie Holloway picked up lunch for her office.

“I just love the festivities of Mexico and Mexican traditions,” says Holloway.

Cindy Martin and her co-workers were treated to a Cinco de Mayo lunch by their boss.

“I love it. It’s great! It’s a party and I’m a party girl, so here we go,” laughed Martin.

Many Mexican restaurants across Middle Georgia are celebrating Cinco De Mayo, including La Parrilla Mexican restaurant on Riverside Drive and La Bamba on Northside Drive. The festivities featured lived music or a DJ. There will also be drink and food specials for adults and face painting and activities for children.

Margarita’s waiter Carlos Zavala admitted he often gets caught-up in the celebration.

“I like seeing all the people come out together, friends, family, kids running around,” says Zavala.
