(NBC)- Authorities in Omaha are investigating a random attack inside a local Walmart that left a young child injured and the suspect dead.
Police say 31-year-old Noemi Guzman entered a Walmart Tuesday morning, where she allegedly shoplifted a large knife before targeting a child inside the store.
Investigators say Guzman approached the child, pulled him away from his caretaker and pointed the weapon at him before slashing his face.
Emergency radio traffic captured the urgency of the situation, with dispatch reporting, “Got one party shot and another party cut.”
Officers quickly confronted Guzman with weapons drawn. According to Omaha Police, at least one officer fired, killing the suspect at the scene.
“There is video that shows the suspect swiping the knife at the child, cutting him across the face,” said Executive Deputy Chief Scott Gray. “Officers at that time, at least one officer fired their weapon.”
The child was injured but survived. His family is now speaking out following the traumatic incident.
“Life is precious, and hold them tight, because you never know how it can turn out,” said the boy’s father.
Court documents show Guzman suffered from schizophrenia. Police say earlier that same day, she had been admitted to a hospital for injuries related to an alleged domestic violence incident and was released just hours before the attack.
