Cherry Street Cycles Celebrates National Bike Month

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Traveling more than 3,000 miles a year, cyclist and business owner Damon Allen continues to grip the handle bars and hit the pavement. This year, he hopes to have some company.

He’s one of many in the Middle Georgia cycling community encouraging people to join his journey for National Bike month. The campaign sponsored by the League of American Bicyclist aims to educate the public on safety and sharing the roads. In recent years, bicycle commuting has doubled across the United States. In Georgia, the Governor’s Office of Highway safety said the state is slowly improving on its bike friendly initiatives. Allen wants to help speed up the process.

“I just love getting on the back country roads. Macon is such a pretty area and riding and seeing all the pretty scenery,” Allen said.

During the month of May, he’s using his store front at Cherry Street Cycles to educate the community about cycling, signage and traffic signals. Most of all he’s sharing his love for the open road, one pedal at a time.

“When I talk to people, they all have some kind of emotional memory or story about their first bike,” Allen said, “bicycles touch people in a very unique way.”

Every Thursday, Allen and a crew of cyclists take a beginner’s ride around downtown Macon. The group leaves at 6 p.m. from Cherry Street Cycles at 420 Cotton Avenue in Macon.
