MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The 44th Cherry Blossom Festival is underway in Macon, bringing a sea of pink to Carolyn Crayton Park as people celebrate the first day of spring.

The festival opened Friday under sunny skies, drawing crowds eager to take part in the annual tradition.

Festival chair Patty Gibbs says this time of year is all about bringing the community together.

“Come be outside, see your neighbors and your friends,” she said. “This is a great time of year. Today is the first day of spring, and we’re ready for it, and so is the festival.”

The festival, which runs through next Sunday, features activities, events and concerts for people of all ages.

Cherry Blossom Festival Queen Londyn Rodgers says she is excited to see people come together and enjoy everything the festival has to offer.

“I’m really excited for everybody to enjoy the community, international friendship, and the beauty of the Cherry Blossom Festival,” she said.

The festival draws visitors from around the world, including Japan.

“In this region of course there is many Japanese companies including YKK, and I hope we continue the good relationship between the community and the Japanese companies here,” said Kenichi Matsuda with the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta.
