‘Carl’s Cotton’ to Help Farmers in Need

JULIETTE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Struggling farmers aren’t unheard of in middle Georgia, which is part of the reason why Ken Powers wanted to do something to help farmers in need.

“My granddaddy was a Godly man, a hard worker, a farmer, fisherman, hunter…my granddaddy was my hero and I just wanted to honor him with this business,” said Powers.

A business, Powers named ‘Carl’s Cotton’ after this grandfather, Carl Bowen. Bowen was a long time cotton farmer from Dooly County.

Powers said, “That is something that is near and dear to us because in our family we had a farming hardship and we know the struggles and the hard work that farmers put in each and every day from sun up to sun down.”

Bowen’s farm was hit by a drought in the 1980’s that took a toll on the harvest, eventually causing him to sell the farm. However, the childhood memories Powers has of spending time farming, live on through t-shirts, hats and croakies that all carry his grandfather’s name.

Each item sold is made in the United States and every shirt is pressed inside Powers’ home in Juliette.

“We hope that by the end of the year we will be able to make a difference in a farmer’s life,” said Powers.

Powers hopes to use a portion of each transaction to help make a difference in the lives of the people living off the land.
