DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center is seeking help for its newly launched “Medical Foster Home Program,” a national initiative that allows veterans to live in a home-like environment while maintaining their independence. The program provides an alternative to traditional nursing home care for veterans who require assistance.

Joanie Oxley, a licensed clinical social worker with the program, said the initiative is designed for veterans who need help but want to retain some level of independence. “Veterans are moving into the home of a caregiver who embraces them like one of their own, one of their family members,” Oxley said. “The Medical Foster Home Program offers 24-hour supervision, medication management, three meals a day, and activities and social opportunities.” She added, “It’s about quality of life.”

Caregivers must undergo annual training in areas such as fire safety and health assessments, ensuring that both veterans and caregivers are well-supported. “When they are in a home environment, everybody does better. Quality of life improves for everyone involved,” Oxley said.

Prospective caregivers and any residents in the home over the age of 16 must pass a federal background check. Interested individuals can learn more by contacting the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center.

For more information about the program or to find out if you are eligible for additional VA benefits to help pay for a Medical Foster Home, contact Joan Oxley, Medical Foster Home Coordinator, at 478-278-8298.
