Candidates make last minute campaign efforts for upcoming election

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Candidates are getting ready for the finish line for Tuesday’s election.

From knocking on doors to dozens of phone calls, each of them wants to make sure they have your vote and say they want to bring a change to Middle Georgia.

“We ask for the vote because that’s what we people want you to do, ask for the vote, and sometimes they want to know what are you going to do if I give you my vote,” C. Jack Ellis, who’s running for Macon-Bibb County tax commissioner, said while in the middle of shaking hands and passing out fliers.

He and other candidates are looking to win on election day and they’re making sure they speak to every person they see.

“The outpouring of good thoughts and best wishes has been great,” Wade McCord, Macon-Bibb’s interim tax commissioner who wants the title permanently, said.

McCord says he’s happy with the work he and his team have put in so far.

“We’ve dropped out wait times down by 30 percent and we’re continuing to work different ways to make it easier for tax payers,” he said.

Standing in his way is Ellis whose priority is to get rid of blighted houses and “garbage fee” tax liens.

“On the direct control of the tax commissioner, either or abandoned or sub-standard houses, we’re going to make sure that those house are either repaired or going to come down and get them in the hands of non-profits so we can get them back on their tax rolls,” Ellis said.

Another race is who will fill the empty seat for state representative district 142. Former state Senator Miriam Paris wants the job.

“My focus is really being a person that solves problems and gets things done that’s what I think being in office is all about,” she said, in the middle of campaign calls.

No stranger to the state representative race, Gerald Harvey is running against Paris.

“I’ve campaigned on the fact that I was going to listen the people and make sure that they’re desires and issues are known,” Harvey said.

Every candidate says they’re campaigning until the very last minute, hoping to make a believer out of an undecided voter and represent Middle Georgia.

If you haven’t voted already, you can head to the polls at 7 a.m. — they’ll be open until 7 p.m.
