Byron-Peach Charter School plans to open next August
The board’s main priority is renovating the facility. They expect to begin renovation in January. They said that’s when the city will hand the building over to the board.
Members are also trying to get the school approved with the Department of Justice.
The board and committees met for the first time on Monday. They discussed plans for policies, curriculum, and fundraising events.
The board set a goal of 50-thousand dollars. One way they plan to raise the money is with a Founding Families Committee.
“Basically, to be a member of that we’re asking for a thousand dollar donation from 50 families,” explained Lewis.
Even though there are already nine members, Lewis wants to add more people to the board to include all areas of Peach County.
“We don’t have much membership from the southern end of the county. So we’re looking to figure out ways to find people who are interested in the charter school and want to service on our board,” said Lewis.
The board is still in its early stages of planning. To finish all the word in time for the school’s opening, the board and committees will meet every Monday.
Lewis expects the first day of school to be August 5th 2015. The first year will only be 9th and 10th graders. They will add 11th and 12th graders the following two years.
