MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Byron man is dead after a wrong-way crash involving a tractor-trailer early Friday morning on Interstate 75 South near Forsyth, according to preliminary findings from the Georgia State Patrol.

The crash happened April 10 at approximately 1:24 a.m. near mile marker 153, according to GSP.

Troopers said a Chevrolet Silverado entered Interstate 75 from the southbound exit ramp at mile marker 153 and began traveling northbound in the southbound lanes.

At the same time, a tractor-trailer was traveling southbound in the far-left lane of the interstate. According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of the tractor-trailer saw the Chevrolet Silverado traveling in the wrong direction and attempted to avoid a collision by moving to the left.

Despite the evasive action, the front of the tractor-trailer struck the left front of the Chevrolet Silverado.

Both vehicles came to a final rest between the left and middle lanes of the interstate.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was identified as 57-year-old Mark Polk of Byron. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.
