Burdell-Hunt Magnet School showcases ‘Leader in Me’ program with Leadership Day

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Burdell-Hunt Elementary School showcased the Bibb County School District’s use of the Leader in Me Program with a Leadership Day celebration on Thursday.
“When I was younger, I really didn’t like talking to people, I was really quiet, but being a part of this school, it helped me find my voice, which is Habit 8 and makes me express myself more,” Christina Taylor said.
Taylor is a fourth grader at Burdell-Hunt, and she’s referring to Stephen Covey’s course, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.”
“When we talk to our students about being pro-active, that means setting goals, having a plan for the day, making sure that you know what it is that you want to do and having a plan for how you’re going to execute that goal and getting it done,” Burdell-Hunt Principal Tanya Allen said.
Allen says students demonstrate these good habits through clubs the school offers.
“Part of our experience with ‘Leadership Day’ is to provide students with opportunities work together, to sharpen their saw and synergize, and to learn how to get along with other people despite anything. So they have chances to explore, to do things that they may not get to do during a regular school day, skills that they can use a life time,” Allen said.
“I really like playing instruments, and when I grow up, I kind of want to be a musician so I can play instruments that I love, like I am in elementary school,” Taylor said. “So I feel like being a leader in this school and playing music will help me in middle school and high school.”
