BS Report: The Return of Matt Ryan

Well, either on Thursday or Friday, we will probably see Matt Ryan have an official formal interview with the Atlanta Falcons for the president of football job. And, you know, they’ve already had some internal discussions between Arthur Blank and Matt Ryan that’s already gone on. That’s been well-reported and widely believed that Matt Ryan has already expressed an interest that is leading to this interview, on Thursday or Friday. So we’ve got a process going on now. They’ll interview Matt Ryan, and if he wants the job, that’s probably his job, let’s be honest. However, they’ve got to follow the Rooney Rule, so they have to interview at least two minorities, even if they have already decided on Matt Ryan as the man for that position, they will have to interview two minorities and that group of people, not only minorities, but the group of people about four right now that are going to interview technically and officially for the president.

Football job can also be candidates for the GM job. So that kind of helps that situation there. To have an idea of if Matt Ryan comes on board, is the president of football for the Falcons, who he might want to interview a second time as the general manager candidate for Atlanta. Look, on Tuesday, it was reported that Matt Ryan will not stay on at CBS in the NFL today if he gets this job with the Falcons. There was no way that they were going to want someone to be the president of football and be part time, because how would he be on the air from 12 until one every Sunday? And then the Falcons having 1:00 games, he would be in New York on the studio at CBS and the Falcons would be playing somewhere. So when the word came out that Matt Ryan is not going to stay with CBS, if you take this job, I think that clear that up.

Now they just have to get financial terms and kind of the the the pecking order. What is the hierarchy going to be? Arthur Blank said on Monday in a letter to the fans that the president of football will be in total control of football operations. So as long as Matt Ryan gets a guarantee of that and is comfortable with that, then he’s probably going to be the man who will be hired. Then they’ll hire a general manager, then they’ll hire a coach. So it’s got to kind of go in that order. Now, there will be a lot of names mentioned for both the GM job and the coaching job, and we already mentioned there a couple of names are out there in Cunningham being one for the GM job, and he may be a great candidate.

He’s with the bears as their assistant general manager. He’s had extensive experience with the Ravens, the Eagles and the bears. But the coaching position is going to get a lot of play because there are some very interesting names out there now. One name is Matt LaFleur, who is the current head coach of the Packers. They, of course played the bears this week and in the playoffs. There have been rumors, though the Packers wanted to move on from LaFleur, and it probably won’t happen if they win against Chicago. But if they lose to Chicago, it will be interesting to see if he could be let go. Now, the reason that is important is because a little flaw was the former quarterback coach for Matt Ryan with the Falcons back about a decade ago when all four was on Dan Quinn staff.

So he’s a name to keep in mind. And so is John Harbaugh, who was let go on Tuesday after 18 years as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Consistency. That’s all you can say about John Harbaugh. He always had the Ravens in there. It’s been reported already that both Matt Ryan and Arthur Blank love John Harbaugh. Of course, Jim Harbaugh, John’s brother, is the current head coach of the Chargers. He interviewed twice for the Falcons position two years ago when they gave it to Raheem Morris. So John Harbaugh to me would be the perfect candidate. How do you not go and say John Harbaugh will give it to you right now. But everybody’s going to want him. He’s going to be an end in contention for the Giants job, the Cardinals job, the writer’s job.

But John Harbaugh is a name to keep in mind, because if Matt Ryan gets this job, it’s the president of football and wants an experienced coach. There may not be a better name on that list than John Harbaugh.
