BS Report: The Falcons Situation

There are a few things to remember about the Atlanta Falcons situation. Matt Ryan walked in the door back at the beginning of the year, and had to put together a football operation. He hired Ian Cunningham as the new GM, and then they hired Kevin Stefanski as the new head coach. They inherited Michael Penix, a player who a couple of years ago was the number eight overall pick in the first round.

Now, there’s no question that Michael Penix has talent, has showed that talent, but he tore his knee up at the end of last year and had to have surgery. So the Falcons new brass knew that he was going to come back from the injury at some point. They had to make the decision. Do we allow Michael Penix to have the chance to show that he can be the starting quarterback for this team, or do we move on from day one and cut him with an injury?

Well, that was tough. So they decided to keep him, release Kirk Cousins and then bring in a veteran player who would not get in the way of Penix if, in fact, he was able to return to health and show that he could be the quarterback they chose to. A young Wallowa, a player like Penix who was also injury prone in his career.

Well, so then they brought in another quarterback, Trevor Simeon, who later decided to retire. Then they brought in Cooper Rush to be the third quarterback because obviously they had two injury prone quarterbacks, a young player and Penix and an older veteran player in town grew up and then the worst thing happened injuries to Tua again, one in camp at the beginning of camp and then one right before the first week of the season.

And Michael Penix slow to go from his knee operation, so they had no choice but to go with Cooper. Rush. Now you know that Matt Ryan, Ian Cunningham and Kevin Stefanski did not want to go with Cooper rush as your starting quarterback in week one of their tenure as being in charge of this franchise, but they had no choice to hurt again, and Penix not able to go.

And that’s why we have the debacle we had on Sunday, with the Falcons playing one of their worst games in the history of the franchise, undoubtedly against the Carolina Panthers. They, of course, pulled the plug on Cooper Rush and brought in Jack Stran, an undrafted free agent, to see what he could do. And of course, it didn’t get much better.

Was it Strahan’s fault? The game was pretty much already over. So we can’t really blame the new people in charge for what happened. They inherited Michael Penix, and they had little choice but to see if Penix could be the guy. That’s what they’re doing on Thursday by almost forcing him to start against the green Bay Packers. I don’t know if Penix is ready to go, but the Falcons pretty much said, look, you’re either going on injured reserve or you’re going to start on Thursday against green Bay.

This is getting ridiculous. Michael Penix was cleared to play physically about three and a half weeks ago, but has refused to play so far in the first two games this season. He wasn’t ready. Then he said last week that it wasn’t mental, it was physical. And yet again, everybody’s asking the question, well, if it’s physical, why were you cleared three weeks ago?

Michael Penix is scared of coming back and getting hit. He really hasn’t gotten hit yet, which is a problem. What’s going to happen the first time one of those green Bay Packers defenders go after his knee? Which is probably going to happen. That’s the question we’ll see answered on Thursday night. So this is a big fat mess. There’s no question about it.

Maybe Tua never place the Atlanta Falcons. I kind of hope that he doesn’t hope he just goes away. Penix is going to have a chance to show what he can do if he can stay healthy. And look, I’d love for him to show that he can be a quarterback for this team. But I have my doubts. I have my doubts because I don’t know if he’ll stay on the field.

Then you have Cooper Rush, who’s a third string quarterback who didn’t belong in the league, starting two games in the first place, and Jack strand, who is obviously not ready to go. It’s a mess. Look, this is a transition year for this franchise. They did not spend all their cap room. They have like $30 million under the cap.
