Boxers Go ‘Toe to Toe’ at Golden Gloves Boxing Championship in Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Boxers from all across the state are putting up a good fight in hopes of taking home the golden gloves.
After years of being held in Augusta, the Golden Gloves Boxing Championship returned to Macon. This weekend, hundreds of amateur boxers went toe-to-toe in the ring at the Bishop Ray Arena. Officials hope the events will renew interests in the sport across Middle Georgia.
“It’s a good event to get behind, it teaches the young boxers throughout the state discipline and shows them how to move on and be positive role models in the community,” said Bert Wells, Georgia Amateur Boxing Vice President.
This weekend, boxers competed in elimination rounds and next weekend, the winners will move on to compete in the championship rounds. From here, fighters will qualify to compete in the regional competition in Knoxville. The matches begin at 2 p.m. and tickets cost $10.
