Bond Denied for Centerville Mother Accused of Hitting Son with Car While Shoplifting

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A judge denied bond for the mother accused of hitting her son with a car while shoplifting in Centerville.

Houston County Judge Edward Lukemire ruled due to prior citations of failing to appear in court, Arkebia Albury would not be allowed bail.

Authorities say the mother was shoplifting with her two kids at Belk in Centerville. She was approached by a loss prevention officer and attempted to flee the scene. Her youngest son made it in the car, but her 4-year-old was still outside. A store employee tried to stop her but she reversed the car and ran over the child.

In court, Houston County District Attorney George Hartwig said the child suffered skull fractures, brain swelling, and may be taken off of life support. He said the “child may not survive”.

Albury’s attorney Larry Fouche disagreed with the child’s health status. He presented letters from teachers and an award from Macon-Bibb County EOCI Head Start/Early Head Start where Albury was named “Parent of the Year”.

During her hearing, Albury wiped away tears as she glanced at her family in the audience. She is charged with Serious Injury by Motor Vehicle, Child Restraint Violations, Driving with a Suspended License, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Cruelty to Children, Theft by Shoplifting and Reckless Conduct. She can petition for another bond hearing in 30 days.
