Bonaire Middle School Hosts 26th Annual Special Olympics

More than 300 students from 13 different schools throughout Houston County came out today to go for the gold in this year’s Special Olympics. Most of the competitors participated in previous years.

“Well my daughter is in the 9th grade at Houston County High School and this is the third year she’s participated in the event,” says Greg Stanley.

Special Olympics Coordinator Dr. Shirley Randall says parents like Greg are one reason this day is special.

“I’m excited about the fact that parents can come and watch their children with disabilities compete.”

The spirit of competition also brought hundreds of community and student volunteers. Students say helping out is a rewarding experience.

“They love training for it, and we’ve been doing it for weeks, and they just are enjoying it,” says Michael Opitz.

After all of the hardwork and dedication, participants like Dennis Field are hoping for a first place ribbon.
