MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is reminding those planning to head out on the lakes this Independence Day weekend to stay alert while boating.

A big concern during this holiday weekend is life jacket safety.

Wes Freeman, a Georgia State Game Warden with the DNR, says every person on board should have a life jacket. He also says throw cushions are important, along with a fire extinguisher.

Freeman says it’s important to know boating rules and laws.

“Keep an eye on everyone on board,” Freeman said. “Watch out for other boaters, and when you’re in the water, just be safe.”

He also mentioned that there are multiple life jacket loaner stations around lakes for those who might need an extra jacket for the day.

Last year, the DNR reported 20 boating deaths, 52 injuries and more than 100 boating incidents. A common cause of these incidents is people not paying attention or being under the influences.

“When it’s hot outside, it doesn’t take much alcohol to get you under the influence,” Freeman said. “Know your limits when drinking on the water.”

Freeman says law enforcement agencies will be monitoring for those under the influence and ensuring that children are wearing life jackets.

For those heading to Lake Tobesofkee to celebrate, the festivities will include live music starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9:15 p.m.
