Bleckley County sheriff warning community of phone scam
According to Sheriff Harold Lancaster, several residents have received phone calls from someone identifying themselves as a representative of the sheriff’s office. The caller tells the victim there is an arrest warrant out for the person for failing to appear for jury duty. In some cases, the caller requests money in exchange for the warrant being dismissed.
The caller ID shows the calls are coming from the sheriff’s office telephone number, but Lancaster says that is not the case.
The sheriff’s office believes the scammers are “spoofing” the department’s phone number. Lancaster adds no arrest warrants have been issued to anyone for failing to appear for jury duty.
The sheriff’s office says there are reports of this type of scam happening in surrounding counties.
Lancaster tells 41NBC no one should send money to an unknown or unverified person.
If you get a call like this, contact the authorities.
