Bill Proposes New Government for Macon & Bibb Co.

State representative Allen Peake is introducing legislation that would create a new, consolidated government for Macon and Bibb County.

In a letter to local elected officials, Peake says, “this bill should provide us with a smaller, more efficient local government, and I hope you will join me in supporting this crucial initiative.  NOW is the time to allow our community to have their voice heard by calling for a referendum on Consolidation.  Let’s let our citizens decide this issue.”

Peake’s plan calls for a 9 member board of commissioners and a county-wide mayor.  There would also be 9 voting districts.

It also puts law enforcement control under the sheriff.  So, there is no mention of the Macon Police department in his plan.

If the bill is passed, voters would decide on the issue later this year on election day in November.  Then if voters approve, a new government known as Macon-Bibb would take shape on January 1, 2013.
