Bibb Schools Asking State for Millions, Plans to Build New School

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County school district is asking the state for millions of dollars to build a new school and fund other projects.

A new Heard Elementary School is one of the projects. The district is paying for it using penny tax dollars, but is asking the Georgia Department of Education to reimburse the money. Officials hope to receive $8 million from the state, with $1 million going to Heard.

School officials say it is a project that has been years in the making.

“This has been a long and anticipated project and we are pleased to be able to re-engage the team and move forward,” Cheryl Canty-Aaron, Bibbs chools Capital Program Administrator, said. “We realize this is a big item for a lot of the community stakeholders in the southern part of Bibb County.”

Canty-Aaron hope to get the money in the 2015 fiscal year. School officials already have a schematic design for the new school and are planning community meetings to get your feedback.
