Bibb Schools’ Administration Answers Board’s Request to Find Additional Budget Cuts

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County School District is still hard at work to erase an $18 million budget deficit.

At the school board’s last budget workshop, the administration proposed cutting 97 positions, most of which would be teachers.

Since the original proposed cuts would still leave the district in the red, board members asked the administration to look into other ways to save money, including more position cuts at the central office.

Thursday, the administration proposed an additional 15 cuts in system level staffing, which includes two more cabinet positions—that would equal almost $1 million in extra savings.

They also said consolidating Barden and Burghard schools would save the district an additional $300,000.

It should be noted none of these cuts have been made official yet, but there are still some tough decisions to be made before the district’s target budget adoption date of June 20.

Also Thursday, board members voted to allow acting superintendent Susanne Griffin-Ziebart to work with her staff to develop a grant application for the controversial Macon Promise Neighborhood.
