Bibb Property Tax Increases with New Budget

Bibb County Commissioners approved the 2012 budget today with a 20-percent property tax increase.

Commissioners Joe Allen and Lonzy Edwards voted against the plan.

Chairman Sam Hart says the board had to raise taxes, even after cutting 24 positions and postponing expensive projects.  Hart told 41NBC News, “We honestly at this time have a revenue problem. It’s caused by the fact that commissioners, before I got here, gave back two mils. And in giving those two mils back they never made the appropriate cuts to deal with that. So this is where we are today. It’s a tough place to be.”

The 83-million dollar budget was approved with a 3 to 2 vote, with Commissioners Hart, Bert Bivins, and Elmo Richardson approving the plan.
