Bibb deputies arrest suspect after Payne City shooting

Payne CITY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – One man is in custody after a shooting in Payne City Tuesday morning.

Deputies say the incident happened around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Brookdale Ave and Short Street.

According to the Bibb County Sheriffs Office, two people were arguing outside a home. That’s when one person shot the other in the hip, and fled the scene.

Sheriff David Davis identified the shooter as 40-year-old Jerome Hewett. Hewett later went into a house on Green Street.

Authorities say once on the scene at Green Street, Bibb County Sheriff’s negotiators tried to speak with Hewett. However, he declined communication with negotiators and refused to come out of the house.

Later, Bibb County Swat Team was contacted and responded to the location.

After one hour of attempted negotiations, the Swat Team entered  the house and Hewett tried to flee out a side door. However, he was apprehended by deputies.

Hewett was taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center and charged with aggravated assault.

 

Authorities identified the victim as 30-year-old William Cecil Smith. He was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition.

No one else was injured during this incident.
