Bibb County Summer Meal Program provides free meals for hundreds of children
The Bibb County School District has launched its summer meal program, offering free breakfast and lunch to children throughout the county.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County School District has launched its summer meal program, offering free breakfast and lunch to children throughout the county.
Summer is now in full swing, and many families are facing the challenge of providing regular meals for their kids.
The program, which is open to all students under 18 years old, has already seen hundreds of kids taking advantage of the free meals provided at 11 participating schools.
“It’s one less thing that they have to worry about,” Condus Shuman, the school district’s executive director of school nutrition, said. “They just need to bring the students to the site. We’ll serve them. It’s a time for them to sit with the children, and they can still see their friends that they normally wouldn’t see in the summertime.”
The meals offered in the program adhere to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) meal component standards, ensuring they are healthy and nutritious. The menu includes whole grains, reduced-fat milk and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Danielle Kendrick, a parent of kids in the Bibb County School District, says the summer meal program is helpful–especially with the cost of living being so high.
“It’s very beneficial for us,” she said. “Food is very high, working and trying to buy food as well, that’s very expensive. So bring them to this program, it will be beneficial to kids.”
The program operates from Monday through Thursday and is closed on Fridays. Breakfast is served from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. Lunch is served from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.
It is worth noting that meals must be consumed on site; pickup is not available due to current regulations.
Children don’t have to be enrolled in the Bibb County School District to receive meals.
