Bibb County Sheriff’s Office seeking $1 million for deputies’ overtime pay

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office needs more than $1 million to help pay for deputies who work overtime.

Sheriff David Davis says in an effort to help the county commission reach its overall budget goal, he’s had to reduce his.

As people with the sheriff’s office have either retired or been fired, current personnel have helped fill in the gaps.

Davis says the sheriff’s office is actively looking for new deputies.

“We’re getting in people. We are hiring. Our civil servants board is screening people. If anyone has prior law enforcement service and they’re already certified, we’re hiring them and they will go straight to patrol,” Davis said.

He adds he thinks this year was a rare year for a large budgetary request because of the amount of people who left the department.

Davis says managing personnel monitor the amount of overtime each deputy takes to make sure that each deputy doesn’t wear down.

The sheriff also says he’s filled about half of the positions that were vacant.
