Bibb County Sheriff’s Office warns residents about law enforcement impersonation scams

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about an ongoing scam involving individuals impersonating deputies and demanding money from family members of incarcerated individuals.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an ongoing scam involving individuals impersonating deputies and demanding money from family members of incarcerated individuals.

According to the sheriff’s office, scammers are contacting families and claiming they must send money to secure the release of a loved one from jail.

The sheriff’s office emphasizes that deputies will never call residents demanding immediate payment or bail money to prevent or resolve an arrest warrant.

The sheriff’s office says scammers may impersonate deputies, jail employees, attorneys or bondsmen while demanding payments through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, Cash App, Zelle or prepaid cards.

Scammers may also pressure victims to remain on the phone, discourage them from contacting authorities or request sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers and banking details.

Residents who receive suspicious calls are urged to hang up immediately, avoid sending money and contacting the appropriate law enforcement agency.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to document the caller’s name and phone number and report the incident through the contact section at www.bibbsheriff.us.

Anyone with information about individuals impersonating law enforcement officers can contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68-CRIME.
