Bibb County Sheriff’s Office awarded $323K grant for DUI, traffic enforcement

The sheriff's office will also participate in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over DUI campaign and Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a $323,001.28 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to support DUI enforcement and other traffic safety efforts in Macon-Bibb County.

The sheriff’s office is one of 32 law enforcement agencies in Georgia receiving a Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T.) grant for the 2027 federal fiscal year, which runs from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.

According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the H.E.A.T. program aims to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities caused by impaired driving and speeding. The program also focuses on increasing seat belt use and educating the public about traffic safety.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office H.E.A.T. Unit will use the funding to develop and implement strategies to reduce crashes caused by aggressive and dangerous driving behaviors.

“Crash data shows enforcement and education of traffic laws are two of most effective countermeasures to help our state and nation reduce crashes and eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” said Allen Poole, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “Each life saved on our roads is one less family that will have to live with the pain of losing a loved one whose life was taken from them in a traffic crash that was preventable”

H.E.A.T. grants fund specialized traffic enforcement units across Georgia. The program was designed to assist jurisdictions with the highest rates of traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities, with funding awarded based on impaired driving and speeding data.

Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said the grant will provide additional resources for traffic enforcement and education.

“This grant strengthens our ability to keep the roads of Macon-Bibb County safe through proactive enforcement, education, and increased visibility. Aggressive driving, speeding, and impaired driving put everyone on the road at risk, and too often the consequences are tragic and preventable. We appreciate the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for its continued partnership and investment in our H.E.A.T. Unit. These additional resources will help our deputies save lives, prevent serious injuries, and make our roadways safer for everyone who travels them,” Davis said.

The sheriff’s office will also participate in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over DUI campaign and Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign.

Those efforts will include high-visibility patrols, multi-jurisdictional road checks and sobriety checkpoints coordinated with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety throughout the year.
