MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County School District is trying to save money by potentially consolidating some schools.

This upcoming school year may be the last time the Bibb County School District has a total of 35 schools. On Thursday, the district presented plans during the Board of Education meeting to potentially consolidate schools.

As COVID funding runs out and inflation rises, the district says it’s getting millions of dollars less in funding. Superintendent Dr. Dan Sims says his teachers and staff also need a raise but knows that could mean raising the millage rate. That’s why the board is considering consolidation.

Bibb County School District Deputy Superintendent Dr. Katika Lovett presented a four-phase timeline of consolidation plans for the 2025 – 2026 school year. Those plans include looking into the district’s finances after consolidation, student performance, enrollment numbers, facilities and transportation.

The phases will happen throughout the school year, with the Board taking a vote in May of 2025. Before that happens, the district is looking to form a steering committee made up of teachers, students, parents and community members.  There will also be town halls throughout the process.

If approved next spring, the district would start the consolidation process during the summer.
