MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Students across the Bibb County School District are putting their mental health to the forefront this week by participating in the student-inspired Mental Health Awareness Week.

According to a school district news release, when Superintendent Dr. Dan A. Sims met with the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee this school year, the feedback he received was an overwhelming request to provide more supports for students, staff and parents around mental health awareness and wellness.

According to Superintendent Dr. Sims, some of the top mental health issues in the district are anxiety with tests, peer-related pressures, self-worth and social media.

“They’re trying to trying to fit into this world,” he said. “And as fast as everything is moving and having exposure to the entire world, they need people in their ears around them to help them navigate all of that. And in the absence of that, that’s how kids get stuck into this mental health trap.”

While students have access to school counselors and school social workers, Dr. Sims says it’s important that parents pay attention to their children and use their personal experience and resources to support them.

“I’ve had a lot of challenges, having gone through depression at a young age in my life, and I made it past that,” he said.

Tilnisha Rosser, the Director of Student Support Services for the Bibb County School District, advises parents to look out for any behavior changes in their child. She says this could be a cry for help.

“If you have a student who is very outgoing, all of a sudden becoming withdrawn, that is something to look for,” Rosser said.

According to Rosser, the first line of defense for students who need help is their school counselor and principal.

To further support families, Southwest High School is hosting a Family Engagement Night on Thursday. Resources and activities centered around mental health will be available. The event starts at 5:30 p.m.

After this week, the school district will review the response from the event and work to help those who are asking for help.
