Bibb County High School Gets Grant for AP Courses

A Bibb County high school is opening it’s doors to advanced placement classes for all students.

Students at Howard High School are already asking how they can sign up for AP classes. For Junior Shivam Patel taking advantage of AP classes now, will one day help him in medical school.

“Now we can get more instruments, things that we need. Our teachers give special study sessions over the summer so they can teach students better and our students have special study sessions throughout the course so they can remain fresh on the materials.”

Raising the level of expectation for all, is exactly what Howard High School wants to accomplish through the Advanced Placement Teacher Training and Incentive Program.

Bibb County School Board President Tommy Burns says, “We would like to see more students taking AP classes and we’d also like to see more teachers trained to teach AP classes.”

It’s a win-win situation for students. Getting a qualifying score on your AP exam of 3 or higher and the benefits will go beyond high school. Plus, students will get a $100 for each qualifying score.

The grant will fund teacher training costs, exam fees, student preparation sessions and the cost of supplies, which for some students is more than enough reason to take higher level courses.

“AP teachers at Howard High School who teach AP math, science or English course will be receiving extra training above and beyond what is provided to other AP teachers across the nation,” said Bibb County School District Director of Gifted and Advanced Academic Programs.
