Bibb County Elementary Schools ‘Take Bronze’ In National Lunch Award
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb County Elementary Schools won a national award from the USDA’s office, for incorporating healthier food options in school lunches.
As a part of the Healthier U.S. School Challenge, Bibb County Elementary schools earned a Bronze Level award.
To earn the Bronze Level award, schools must offer a different vegetable every day of the week. In addition to that, three of the five vegetables must be dark green or orange. At least one serving of dry beans or peas has to be offered each week. Fresh fruit must be offered every day. Whole grains need to be offered daily, and only low fat or skim milk is offered.
In addition to healthy food options, schools have to offer students at least 45 minutes of physical education every week.
Bibb County School Nutritionist, Dr. Cleta Long, said these standards are priority throughout the school system.
“When children have good nutrition, they’re more capable of learning, or more able to learn and do their work. By having these healthier meals, we are also helping to set the stage for learning and being successful in their schools.”
Bibb County Elementary Schools are one of 14 school districts in the state to earn this award from the USDA. Each school in the district won $500.00 and a signed plaque from the USDA’s office.
