Bibb County Democrats Sending Letter to DOJ Opposing Nonpartisan Elections

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Members of the Bibb County Democratic Party are asking the Department of Justice to deny clearance on the four senate bills that call for nonpartisan elections in Bibb County.

In a letter addressed to Assistant Attorney General, Thomas Perez, it says the new legislation goes against the consolidation bill the residents of Macon and Bibb County voted on in July 2012.

The members of the Bibb County Democratic Party believe a change to the legislation should be voted on by the people of Macon. They refer to the bills as a “bait-and-switch.”

That is the same term, State Representative Nikki Randall, and State Senator David Lucas used to describe the measure.

The letter also calls this a “veiled attempt to thwart democracy.” To read the full letter, click here.
