Bibb County Commissioners Closer To Finalizing List Of SPLOST Projects
Improving public safety is at the top of the list of projects funded by a new penny tax that Bibb County Commissioners met to discuss today.
The SPLOST project list calls for $59 million to help cut crime in the Macon downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods. Another area of focus includes improvement of recreational facilities, which calls for $42 million over a 6 year period. Chairman Sam Hart says, a reduction in crime will come as a result of improved recreational facilities.
“We are looking at adequate patrol cars, looking at substations to make sure that the police presence is present in our entire community,” says Hart. “We also feel that if we can get an adequate recreation department, again that has some implications for improving behavior, and giving people something to do.”
Chairman Hart will meet with City Council tomorrow to discuss their views on the SPLOST. The Board of Commissioners will re-convene shortly afterward to finalize the list of projects.
