Bibb County Cancer Survivors Score a Cure

The 2011 Relay for Life of Bibb County kicked off on Friday at Al Sihah Shrine Park.

Cancer survivors and their support systems came out in full force ready to score a cure.

“I found out just a few weeks before Mother’s Day that I had cancer and it was soon after Mother’s Day that I started my chemo and I promised my mom last year that this would be a better Mother’s Day and it certainly is,” said cancer survivor Jaime Kaplan.

Kaplan was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia just over a year ago. On Friday, she stepped onto the track for her first lap.

“It’s absolutely amazing and to take that lap and cheerleaders from different schools they made up cheers about fighting to win, it’s so true you fight to win this battle.”

With her mother Letty by her side, cancer survivor of 35 years they say today is a very special day.

“I didn’t know how I would react when I got here and when I walked up to the tent to sign in, I got really emotional and then to stand in line and know you’re about to take a lap as a survivor, it’s pretty emotional.”
