MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is renewing its call for the community to help solve crimes. Cameras you may have around your home, or on your doorbell, could be the key piece of evidence they need.

Captain Jean Lebeuf with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says the intelligence unit will have a way to monitor cameras on commercial businesses at all times and would access residential cameras while investigating violent crimes.

“So that my unit, the intelligence unit, are the only ones that have the location,” he said. “We have an opportunity to see where the cameras are, out in the community; so, if there is a shooting or violent crime, or any crime in a community; we have contact information to reach out quietly to request video from those individuals,” said Lebeuf.

Lebeuf says the Operation Safer Together Program has been beneficial for the sheriff’s office.

“And we’ve been able to see suspects run right by them, and able to get a good video of the suspect running right by,” he said. “So, we may not get video of the incident itself occurring, but a door down, where we can hear the gunshots, we can see somebody running across the yard with guns in their hands and see that face. It’s a way for the public to get some investment in it as well.”

The sheriff’s did not provide statistics on arrests made using the cameras.

If you’re still on the fence about registering your camera, Captain Lebeuf says your business is safe with the sheriff’s office.

“So, it’s less than ten people total that have access to the list,” he said. “And even then, it won’t be the cameras themselves. We do not have access to residential cameras; we will not be coming into your home; we will not be able to see anything from inside your homes. What we have is just a list of who has cameras, and we can reach out to you, then you can pull the video.”
