Bibb Commissioners Pleased with Animal Shelter Design Update, Project Moving Forward

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb County’s new animal shelter will hold nearly 140 animals, and the best part is, there’ll still be room for expansion.

Tuesday night, architects from Tevis Architects and Dunwody/Beeland Architects presented the building’s design plan to the Bibb County Commission.

The site will be located back off the road in a wooded area in the 4800 block of Fulton Mill Road.

The $3 million SPLOST-funded project will feature a round driveway and a natural setting that will allow for walking trails and even a dog park.

Architects say the building’s location on the site allows for easy expansion if overcrowding becomes a problem at the new shelter.

“If you’ve ever gone out to our animal shelter now, you really don’t want to go out there,” says Gene Dunwody, Sr. of Dunwody/Beeland Architects.  “It’s going to be a much more attractive place to go.”

“It’s our shelter,” says Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare director, Sarah Tenon.  “It’s not just the commission’s or Sarah’s, it’s the whole community’s shelter, and I’m just really excited about it.”

Commissioners were pleased with the presentation and architects say the next step is to produce a final rendering of the project.

Dunwody says he expects construction to start by summer.
