Bibb Citizens Remind New Animal Shelter Designers to Keep Focus on Animals

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb County animal advocates say a nice, new animal shelter is fine and dandy, but they want the shelter to be focused on the animals and not on the people of the community.

Citizens got a chance Thursday night to offer input on the design of the new shelter.

Gene Dunwody, Sr. and Jr. were there from Dunwody/Beeland Architects, along with Daniel Tevis from Tevis Architects.

Since you have to drive by the landfill to get to the current shelter, commissioners want the new site to be a destination point that could include a dog park, complete with walking trails.

At Thursday’s forum, several voiced concerns over attention to detail at the new building, asking its designers to remember that its primary focus should be on the animals and not the people who work at or visit the shelter.

“A community that takes care of its animals says a lot about itself,” says Tevis. “And obviously these people are very interested in that aspect of this community.”

According to architects, this won’t be the last chance the public has to submit ideas on the project.

They tell us construction on the shelter is set to begin this summer.
