BBB Warns of scam as JOANN Fabrics closes stores
The Better Business Bureau is warning shoppers to keep an eye out for fake "going out of business sales" online.

Middle Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Better Business Bureau is warning shoppers to keep an eye out for fake “going out of business sales” online.
With JOANN Fabrics shutting down it’s physical stores, many locations have been offering deals. The BBB says scammers will pose as a real business and post ads on social media, promising discounts of up to 90% off.
When you click on that ad, it may take you to a website that looks legitimate. You’ll see the company’s real logo and familiar products listed for sale and additional discounts at check out. But, one key element is missing. The website’s URL is different.
The BBB says it’s received numerous reports through their scam tracker about these fake JOANN websites.
There are a few ways to avoid those scams without writing off a potential deal.
Confirm the site’s URL
Check the search bar at the top of your browser. It should match the name of the site you’re trying to reach. For example, the URL on this webpage should start with “https://www.41nbc.com/”.
Someone building a fake website might add words and change a letter or two, hoping shoppers don’t notice. That could look like “https://www.4lnbc.com/” or “https://www.41nbcnews.com/.
Avoid clicking on links
Instead of clicking on an ad, try searching for the page you want to reach on a web browser.
Be wary of deals that sound too good to be true
The BBB says these liquidation scams play on people’s desire to get a good deal. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. Double check the source and the deal before buying.
Use a credit card when shopping online
The BBB recommends using a credit card, as they offer fraud protection that debit cards don’t. If a scammer gets your information, the company may allow you to contest the charge and get your money back.
Be careful with your personal information
If you’re suddenly asked for additional personal information, like your Social Security number, the BBB says that’s a red flag.
