MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Better Business Bureau has issued an alert after receiving reports of “free” roof inspections.

Individuals receive a call, or a person shows up at the door claiming to represent a roofing company, according to the BBB. A roofer claims they’re working on a nearby house and is offering free inspections to neighbors.

Con artists often use the name of the state (i.e. Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina) plus “Roofing” or “Construction” as their business name, according to Scam Tracker.

The “roofer” will offer a free inspection. The person will inspect your house and may offer vague answers to your questions.

The “roofer” may fabricate the extent of damage or show you pictures of someone else’s damaged roof. The BBB says to not hire these companies.

The BBB offers tips to avoid roofing scams:

  • Beware of unsolicited offers.
  • Get your insurance company to inspect your roof.
  • Research roofing companies before you hire.
