Bass Road widening project moves forward as property owners prepare for right-of-way process
Right-of-way acquisition starts soon for the Bass Road widening project, which will expand the corridor and replace bridges in north Macon.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Georgia Department of Transportation’s plan to widen more than a mile of Bass Road in north Macon is moving forward, and local property owners may soon feel the impact.
Attorney David Needham with the Georgia Eminent Domain Law Firm says now is the time for homeowners and business owners along the corridor to understand their rights.
“The Bass Road widening project is a mile and a half long, going from two lanes to four lanes, with a 20-foot raised median and new shoulders,” Needham said.
The project will also replace the bridges over Interstate 75 and Beaver Dam Creek.
Right-of-way acquisition begins next year. Needham says means property owners will start receiving notices, surveys and eventually an offer for what the state considers just compensation.
“There’s a time period for agents on behalf of the county to reach out to affected property owners and work with them,” he said.
Needham says the most important thing for families and businesses is understanding what their property will look like once construction is complete.
Businesses along Bass Road are no stranger to traffic issues, and some owners say the area is overdue for improvements.
Jackie Perez, who owns Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio on Bowman Road connected to Bass Road, says accidents and congestion have become common.
“The amount of accidents and people complaining, even when it’s open, so many people have had accidents there,” Perez said.
Despite the growing pains that construction will bring, Perez says she’s looking forward to the finished project.
“Even though it will be annoying while we wait for it to be finished, it’ll be really great once it is,” she said.
Construction is expected to begin in May 2026. To contact the Georgia Eminent Domain Law Firm, call 1-888-391-1339.
