Barrel horse races bring big money to Middle Georgia
“It’s the young kids–and they bring momma and daddy, grand-momma and granddaddy,” said Georgia Fairgrounds Executive Director Randy Moore.
It was an international family affair Wednesday night.
“We’ve got kids from over 40 states and seven countries competing here this week,” said Moore.
Barrel horse racers have taken over Perry–and that’s okay with racer Emily Richey.
“It’s been really cool, like, I didn’t think I’d be coming to a big show like this this soon,” said Richey. “I’ve only been doing it for a year and a half and everything.”
The National Barrel Horse Association brings more than 50,000 people for one of the biggest events the Georgia Fairgrounds hosts.
“It’s kind of overwhelming, but it’s been really fun,” said Richey.
Competitors took a break and celebrated their pride in their hometown with a parade.
Through the throwing candy and fun, Moore is excited the barrel races can help Middle Georgia’s economy.
“Another part of our mission is certainly to be an economic stimulus for Middle Georgia and beyond and we accomplish that in good fashion each and every year through the 200 some-odd events that we host here annually,” said Moore.
The races are going on for the rest of the week at the Georgia National Fairgrounds.
The finals will be on Saturday.
