Ban Proposed on Use of All Electronic Devices Behind the Wheel

The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending a nationwide ban on the use of any portable electronic devices while driving.

The call for the ban came during a NTSB hearing focusing on a Missouri bus crash that left two people dead and dozens injured last year.

The chain-reaction crash started with a 19-year-old driver who was texting.

He was killed, along with a 15-year-old student on one of the buses.

Almost 3,100 people died due to distracted driving last year according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

GPS devices would be exempt from the proposed ban, but hands-free devices would not.

The NTSB does not have any regulatory or legislative authority, but board members are calling on state legislatures to take action.
