Baldwin County home up in smoke

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Baldwin county man barely escaped his burning home, Thursday morning.

He told firefighters he was awaken as flames quickly spread through his house.

The 4 a.m., blaze happened at 1045 Sparta Hwy.

Baldwin County Fire Chief Troy Reynolds said they are not releasing the victim’s name. Chief Reynolds would only say that the homeowner was hospitalized for burn injuries he received during the fire.

Nothing could be salvage from the blaze, according to Baldwin County Fire Capt. Lewis Osborne, who described the manufactured home as a total loss.

“The flames had already taken over the house, and the roof had already collapsed,” said Capt. Osborne. “We actually had to do an exterior attack on the house, as far as extinguishing the fire.”

Osborne says the flames were so intense, that it was too dangerous for firefighters to enter the burning home.

Hancock County firefighters also responded to the house fire.

Baldwin County Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Chief Reynolds says he is not sure if there was a smoke detector in the mobile home. However, he did warn that every home should have one.
