Autry, Defense Get Bobcats Home Win, 1-0
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The Georgia College soccer team (2-2) evened out its record with their first home victory of the season, downing Shorter College (1-3) 1-0 Sunday at Bobcat Field.
Early play was back-and-forth, with junior Rebekah Autry (Winder, Ga.) finding the net off a cross from freshman Sol Baldassini (Miami) with 3:02 left in the first half. The goal was Autry’s first of the season, and the third of her career.
Georgia College dominated the shot chances in the first half, doubling-up Shorter 12-6.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Bobcats further controlled play and ended with a 24-13 shot advantage.
The Bobcat defense was stingy, led by Allyease Schwartz (Roswell, Ga.) and Rachel Overley (Kennesaw, Ga.) who each played a full 90 minutes on the back line.
Freshman Jessica Catapano (Alpharetta, Ga.) picked up her first career shutout, making all four stops she saw to blank the Hawks.
Shorter goalkeeper Taylor Hays was busy, making 13 saves on the day to keep her team in it. One of Hays’ best saves came off a shot from senior defender Anna Barrow (St. Simons, Ga.) in the 80th minute. Barrow took a chance from near the right sideline roughly 40 yards out and it bent just off Hays’ fingertips as she leapt toward the upper left corner.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m., traveling to Anderson University.
