Autism-Awareness Film Premieres at Macon Amstar

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new film chronicling the 40 day journey of a father looking for answers about his son’s autism premiered in Macon today, and local advocates for autism awareness are celebrating the movie.

The United States of Autism is a documentary by Richard Everts, who wanted to know more about the disorder after his son’s diagnosis. After 11 thousand miles around the country, and visiting dozens of families affected by autism, the film is garnering acclaim all over the country.
Tonight, Central Georgia Autism, Ltd. and the SoChi Gallery hosted a mixer before the Macon premiere of the film at amstar 16 theater.

Organizers Terri Goodridge and Julie Evans say getting people talking about a condition affecting thousands of families is essential to understanding autism.

“There’s so many people out there that are affected by autism and this movie shows a lot about the rewards and about the struggles,” says Evans.

“People think it’s a mental health issue. It’s not,” says Goodridge. “It’s a neurological condition.”
