Authorities Asking Travelers to Use Caution Over Holiday Weekend

CENTERVILLE, Georgia — Authorities says wet weather and crowded roads are a recipe for more accidents this holiday weekend.

According to Captain Roger Hayes with the Centerville Police Department, by this time last year there were 499 deaths on the roads. This year that number has increased by 4% to 520.

Hayes says this 4th of July weekend, the goal is to keep that numbering from increasing.

He suggests using extra caution on two lane highways and be aware of the wet weather.

“The Georgia routes, and two lane routes that’s two lane highways, there’ll be not as good as drainage as they should be and so there’s a lot of roadways that are being flooded. So we’ve got flood warnings out around the state, so just any highways around the stack, you’ve got to be mindful of those water puddles,” said Hayes.

Hayes has four suggestions for you if you’re out on the road this weekend: slow down, wear your seatbelt, don’t text and drive, and drive somber.

Hayes says while we’re in the middle of ‘Operation Zero Tolerance,’ if you’re caught drunk driving, you’ll go to jail.
